OSIA CSJ District 1 Essay Contest

District 1 CSJ sponsored an essay contest on the subject of immigration, Students at the Ronkonkoma Middle School in the Conneqout school district who were in the Italian language classes were given an assignment to interview a family member who had emigrated to the United States. The students were then asked to write an essay based on the interview incorporating 10 responses to questions about the immigrant's experiences when coming to America. In addition, they were required to include visuals and/or artifacts. Although this was a class assignment required by all students regardless of ethnicity, only the Italian-American students were eligible for the awards provided by OSIA CSJ District 1. Every year the New York State Commission for Social Justice sponsors events that raise awareness of the organizaton and help to provide funding for the CSJ's fight against bias and bigotry against Italians, Italian-Americans and other ethnic, racial or religious groups. The objective of some CSJ events is to foster a working relationship between the CSJ and other like minded organizations and to serve to as a format for CSJ and OSIA members to meet and discuss issues and concerns.

In February each year the NYS CSJ holds their annual dinner dance.

The Annual CSJ/B'nai B'rith Solidarity Breakfast is held in May.

A day at the Races at Belmont Park is held each September.

During the course of the year meetings are held with CSJ and the Long Island Chapter of the American Association of Teachers of Italian (AATI) to encourage the teaching of Italian in local schools and to disseminate information to the teachers on Italian culture and history.
